I would love to go back to sleep. But what sits next to me a great eye opened. A wonderful cup of coffee.

There is nothing in the morning like your first cup of coffee. The mug is warm in your hands and the smell of it…oh the smell of it. It is nutty and homey and just plain good. Growing up I remember the weakest, most flavorless coffee. We would only buy skim milk so if you added it in to your coffee you had a milky, watery, thin cup of nothing. It is more than just caffeine to wake you up. A good cup of serves as a substance to help smooth sleep into wake and night into day.

The favorite coffee in our house is good old Dunkin Donuts coffee. The smell hits you as soon as you open the bag. Even the kids say they love the smell of the coffee. We start our coffee the night before and get it all set and programmed to start brewing in the morning. The rich smell wafts through the house at around 5am. When I wake up it is the first thing I think of. I always pray that nothing happened in the night like a power outage that will stop the pot of delicious goodness from being there waiting for me when I enter the cold, dark kitchen at 5am. And there it sits. Beckoning me.

I fill my special mug and add just a dash of heavy cream. I cup that warm mug in my hands and take my first sip and that is when I try to talk myself into having a great day. Seriously, the coffee helps by making it a great start. We used distilled water in our house. If I am going to spend the money for the good kind of coffee, I wont allow any metals or yucky tap flavors to ruin the one simple thing that is going to get me on the road to having a great day. Only 1 tablespoon of coffee to 1 cup of water. It takes maybe 5-7 minutes to brew. I make sure to give myself at least a half hour to enjoy my good day ritual. Sometimes I need more than a half hour, but for the most part I can get my act together in 30 minutes.

These are the moments I live for.
